When it comes to our carbon footprint, we are all feeling the pressure of responsibility. The press is filled with scaremongering stories of us all being consumed by a deluge that only Noah’s Ark could possibly save us from if we don’t reign in our use of climate warming chemicals. One of the biggest enemies of our fragile environment is, we are told, our cars and the carbon monoxide fumes that are emitted from them.
Archive for August 12th, 2008Anyone who has been in Texas for very long has heard someone say, “If you don’t like Texas weather, just wait a minute.” Austin and the surrounding Hill Country enjoy some of the most temperate weather in Texas. Summers are hot, winters are mild and spring and fall months are typically quite pleasant. Sun shines in the Austin area for 300 days or more and 90 degree plus temperatures occur on about 110 days out of the year. That means 200 sunny days in Texas are less than 90 degrees Fahrenheit, more if you consider the fact that there are overcast days in the summer that can be very hot. Global warming and climate change is big in the news at present, and calls for a more sustainable way of living are being directed at consumers at every level. It has become common practice to recycle household waste, sorting through cans, bottles, plastic and paper. Not as common, but eagerly encouraged is collecting organic waste to feed the compost bin, which in turn feeds the vegetables growing in the garden to complete a small sustainable cycle. |
